Because more a more equipment is being connected to a home/business network like IPTV, Alarms, Gaming consculs and appliances, customers are forced to increase ports with a data switch. However unless a UPS battery is included with the data switch, most of the customers services will fail during a mains power outage

Customers need to connect lots of their home or business equipment together and often run out of available Ethernet ports on the Router supplied by the ISP. Its recommended that vital equipment is connected to the data switch located on the network access modem which normally has  UPS battery backed up support so therefore is less likely to fail during a power outage.

Contractors and ISP’s recommend that a UPS such as the PowerBrick is used to power external data switches supporting “vital” circuits because situations can arise where these internal processors can require an occasional automatic reboot.

Data switches are generally extremely reliable and because of this they are an unexpected point of failure that can confuse customers at the most inconvenient moment.

Contractors need to be vigilant about where vital alarm circuits are introduced the customers network and in particular if an external data switch is installed, such equipment if used should be powered from an Power server UPS such as the PowerBrick.

Data switches sometimes are combined with wireless access points and if this occurs, contractors should take great care to ensure the DHCP settings do not interfere with customers network gateway devices. Data switches with VLAN functions should also be carefully managed so as not to disturb the customers Alarm data network access requirements.

Contractors generally connect vital Alarm equipment to the data switch port located network access modem router device or the point closest to the wide area network.

ISP’s are encouraged to supply network access modem router devices that include data switches as powering additional external equipment with a UPS to ensure connectivity during a power outage is an unnecessary additional task during installation.

Where Alarm equipment is to be connected to the customers network, ISP’s should recommend a Power Server Unit like PowerBrick and install it on a layer three (3) data switch connection as this provides the customer with a self-monitored solution.

ISP’s need to manage their installation contractors to  connect vital Alarm equipment to the data switch port located network access modem router device or the point closest to the wide area network.
